Meeting Mercator's Metahuman

"Instead of reading up on history, we want people to engage with it directly. Can you bring Mercator back to life?"

For Toerisme Vlaanderen, we brought the legendary cartographer Gerardus Mercator back to life. Not as a statue or voiceover, but as a hyper-realistic digital human capable of holding natural conversations with visitors, both in physical spaces and online.

Built with cutting-edge Conversational AI and ultra-low latency speech technology, the Metahuman Mercator engages guests in lifelike dialogue, adapting to their interests, knowledge level, and language, all in real time.

A Conversation with History

At the heart of this installation lies a simple but magical idea: visitors can talk to Mercator. Powered by conversational AI, our system processes speech, generates responses, and animates the avatar including facial expressions, subtle gestures, and precise lip synchronization, in a fraction of a second.

The result is a seamless, natural interaction that feels less like talking to a computer and more like conversing with a living historical figure.

Where Art, Technology and Heritage Meet

The digital Mercator is designed to educate and inspire, inviting visitors to explore his work, discoveries, and influence in a way that feels personal and human. Using advanced knowledge integration, Mercator tailors his responses to each visitor, whether they are history enthusiasts, students, or casual museum visitors. He can even initiate conversations proactively, greeting passersby with context-aware remarks or fascinating facts about his maps and legacy.

Realism Without Compromise

Achieving this level of immersion required not only powerful AI, but also deep optimization of the speech pipeline to keep latency imperceptible. We fine-tuned every layer from audio quality to animation timing, ensuring that Mercator’s responses arrive as fast as human reflexes, maintaining perfect rhythm, emotion, and engagement.

The result: a digital experience so fluid that the boundary between human and artificial feels almost invisible.

A Glimpse into the Future of Cultural Experiences

With Metahuman Mercator, Toerisme Vlaanderen demonstrates how AI and heritage can coexist to make history truly interactive. It’s not just about technology, it’s about connection, storytelling, and preserving the human spirit behind centuries-old knowledge.

For us, this project embodies what we do best: combining technical precision, creative storytelling, and emotional authenticity to create experiences that educate, captivate, and inspire.
